Someday I will tell my children that the first chairlift I ever rode
was on an indoor mountain in Dubai.

Today on my walk down to the library, I caught them switching the movie times for the new film at the Avon. The Avon’s been around since my grandmother was in college during World War II. The last time she visited, it was the only business on Thayer street she recognized.

A few months ago, I was in California for a performance and my parents and brother surprised me with a visit. It has been a very long time since we had a real family vacation, so we decided to drive into the mountains for a few days of adventure.
At one motel, there were funny tubular pillows on the beds. My brother waited until I was washing my hands at the sink and casually held the pillow against the mirror in front of me. Instinctively, I leaned my head forward onto it, and he instantly let go. Because my hands were under running water, I didn’t move. If I had, the pillow would have fallen straight into the sink. I stood stuck with my face planted in a pillow against the mirror while my brother toppled over in hysterics. I yelled at him to get me a towel, but he just howled with glee and left me to fumble for one. Months later, I received this photo in my inbox.

Only a few days after teaching my AP Literature students Rocking Horse Winner, I discovered this in a friend’s house in Norfolk. Hopefully this one had a kinder history.
