Performing and teaching at Cabramatta High School… and then performing at the Lebanese Muslim Association in Sydney!
Sarah and Phil arrived in Sydney, and were in a small car accident within 20 minutes of being on the ground. Welcome! Fortunately, everyone was alright (except the cars) and they made it to Cabramatta High School safe and sound. After a delightful performance and workshop with students, there was just enough time to get a bite to eat and change clothes, before it was time for a performance at the Lebanese Muslim Association. The highlight of the evening was sharing the stage with local artists Matuse, Zohab Khan, and Omeima Sukkarieh.

Tributaries: Proposal
A Proposal
When Phil and I performed at “Sweetalkers” in Melbourne, Australia, we were told that there were two guys who wanted to perform a duet poem to introduce our feature. Abdul Hammoud and Meena Shamaly had introduced themselves to me earlier in the evening, but had said no more than a few words to me the whole night. Phil and I were happy to have an opener and sat back to watch their duet. The resulting poem was equal parts surprising, flattering, horrifying, and awesome. Click the photo above to watch their performance, and understand why this is what I was doing in the corner.

Performing and teaching at Carey Grammar School… and then performing at Sweetalkers in Melbourne!
Sarah and Phil spent the day teaching and performing for students at Carey Grammar school, and then performed for a packed house at Bar Open on Brunswick Street. Many thanks to the two gentlemen who performed an opening duet poet in the form of a marriage proposal that caused Sarah to blush 90 shades of red, many thanks to the organizers (especially Randall Stephens) for putting it all together, and extra thanks to all the folks who came out to support!

Performing at Slamalamadingdong in Melbourne!
Sarah and Phil performed a feature set at Melbourne’s exciting new Slam venue, along with a who’s who of amazing local poets. The room was packed, the audience was excited, the slam was whiz-bang, and the MC was great. Extra thanks to Michelle Dabrowski for organizing and making everyone feel so welcome.

Melbourne, Australia.
That there on the left is the immensely kind Xavier Rudd, getting ready
to be interviewed on 774 ABC radio. And that there on the right
is a photograph of a reflection of a graffiti mural in a window
of a bar on Brunswick Street. Which is about as close to hip as I’ll ever get, I reckon.

Performing at the Blu Jaz with Word Forward!
It is unbelievable how many people crammed into the upstairs room of the Blu Jaz to see this show. The best part was how diverse the audience was. High school and middle school students with their parents, teachers from the recent IBO conference, locals, expats, poets, and everybody in between. The three ladies in this photo definitely won the evening’s #1 fan award. Much thanks to Word Forward for organizing the event, and for all the local Singapore poets who graced the stage as well!

Little India, Singapore.
Shoes outside temple, prayer ceremony, temple sculpture, musicians.
Also, if you were wondering: the National Orchid Garden in the
Singapore Botanical Gardens is indeed full of some of the most
ridiculous looking flowers I’ve ever seen. Tendrils not withstanding.
Also, also: If you ever wind up in Singapore, most folks will tell you to go
and see the Long Bar at the Raffles Hotel. The Hotel was built in 1887,
and the Long Bar is the home of the famous “Singapore Sling.”
Since I don’t drink alcohol, the visit might have been a lost cause,
were it not for the old tradition of eating peanuts and throwing the shells
on the ground. Fortunately, that was an activity I could easily participate in.
